The Things My Vagina Has Seen (A Story About Sex and Infertility)
If your sex education was anything like mine, chances are it was pretty awful. From the little bit I can remember, it went something like this.
This is a penis, and these are the testes.
This is a vagina and these are the ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus.
Girls bleed once a month if they’re not pregnant.
Sex results in pregnancy.
Don’t do sex.
It was pretty bare bones. I’m certain actual intercourse was never mentioned. But at the bare minimum, you’d think I would have been reasonably confident that a pregnancy wouldn’t occur unless an actual penis entered a vagina. But I wasn’t, because was intercourse the same thing as sex? I wasn’t completely sure. However, one thing did stand out to me, and that was that getting pregnant was incredibly easy. So much so, that I needed to be hyper vigilant. I remember being afraid that my high school boyfriend would be able to get me pregnant by good old-fashioned dry humping. Oh, to be 17 again. As the old adage goes, you spend your teens and 20s desperately trying not to get pregnant and your 30s and 40s desperately trying to become pregnant.
